Commissioners at Oxford University to discuss the economics of modern slavery

Commissioners and guests gathered at Nuffield College, Oxford for a workshop exploring the economics of modern slavery and human trafficking.

The session brought together economists, academics and policymakers to discuss a broad range of interconnected issues, including the relationship between migration and vulnerability to exploitation, the role of AI and technology in both enabling abuse and supporting detection, and what research on survivors is telling us about the nature and scale of the problem.

The workshop forms part of the Commission's wider effort to ensure Phase 2 is grounded in the strongest possible evidence, and to ensure that modern slavery is recognised as the economic crime it is. Modern slavery and human trafficking is not only a human rights crisis, but a crisis of security, economics and development.
